Introduction
The lotus of Vishuddha is smoky grey or the colour blue of rain clouds, with sixteen radiant petals. Translating to “Immaculate Purity,” Vishuddha is the great alchemical filter of the subtle body, neutralizing toxic words, heavy energy, and impure thoughts before they enter our field. As we purify this chakra, our most painful experiences are alchemized into the nectar of wisdom.
Located at the pit of the throat, Vishuddha serves as a bridge between the heart’s emotional intelligence and the mind’s higher vision. Here, as we release attachment to worldly desires, the true process of spiritual transcendence begins. By deepening our capacity for concentration, the mind naturally settles into the “inner space” that mirrors the outer universe.
As Vishuddha is purified our most painful experiences are alchemized into the nectar of wisdom and knowledge.
A Note on the Occult Gate
Sadhguru, a globally recognized yogi and mystic, offers a cautionary perspective on this energy center, describing Vishuddha as the primary seat of the occult. Because an active Vishuddha expands your energetic field, it can draw the attention of disembodied energies and subtle phenomena, requiring a high degree of spiritual grounding and inner stability to navigate safely. He cautions that as a practitioner’s resonance shifts away from mundane reality, focusing prematurely or exclusively on this center can make it challenging to integrate into ordinary social structures.

Space – The Element of Vishuddha
As the first element created, Space serves as the essence from which everything manifests. It is the vast canvas in which the other four elements—Earth, Water, Fire, and Air—exist and interact. As the most subtle of all elements, Space is the pure container of existence, holding the potential for all sound and form.
Though physical sound requires a medium like air or water to travel, cosmic Space holds sound in its purest, unmanifest state. Out of this vast, silent vacuum, the entire universe was vibrated into being through the primordial seed sound Om, from which all creation springs.
The Symbol
Vishuddha is the throat centre, traditionally represented as a lotus with sixteen petals, coloured a smoky grey or the hue of rain clouds.
Inscribed upon the sixteen petals in brilliant gold or white are the sixteen Sanskrit vowels. Unlike the psychological vrittis found in the lower chakras, these vowels are understood as imperishable divine syllables and fundamental sound vibrations (Mātṛkās) that are the acoustic foundation for all speech, mantras, and cosmic manifestation.
In the white moon centre is the five-faced form of Shiva and the Goddess Shakini, embodying the ultimate purification of sound, breath, and expression.
The region is a pure white circle representing Space, where the presiding elemental vehicle is the white elephant, symbolizing the vast, unshakeable expanse of space that underpins all sound and vibration. At the absolute centre of the chakra rests the principal bija mantra ham (हं), governing the element of space.
A pure silver crescent moon represents Soma, the cooling nectar of immortality. It sits underneath or cradles the seed mantra ham and the bindu, symbolizing the purification and transformation of energy as it moves through the throat centre.
Visualizing Space in Vishuddha
Consciousness naturally resides in space, but a common challenge in meditation is how to visualize an element that is colourless, transparent, and all-pervading. Because the mind cannot easily anchor itself to a void, the traditional chakra diagram uses symbolism for the mind to visualize: space is personified and dressed in white, seated upon a white elephant within the full moon.
Instead of trying to visualize a flawless, perfectly transparent sphere or void (Bindu), Vishuddha is depicted as a luminous, pearlescent white moon within the smoky petals – the essence of pure, unobstructed light.
To give this transparent void stability and magnitude, the texts place the Airavata, the white elephant, within the luminous circle. The elephant provides a sense of immense bulk, weight, and stability, grounding the vast expanse of space.
The harmonizing vibration of the seed mantra ham resonates in the throat, opening and purifying the element of Space within Vishuddha. When you breathe or chant the bija mantra ham, it clears out the static noise within the throat so the mind can experience the vastness of space. As a symbol of pure frequency, the syllable ham also marks one of the two petals of the Ajna chakra, encapsulating the resonance that carries awareness upward into higher perception.

Take a slow, steady breath in, and as you exhale, softly repeat the seed mantra Ham (pronounced like “hum”). Allow the sound to vibrate gently. Notice where it resonates. Feel the subtle clearing effect, melting away tension and bringing a sense of spacious stillness to the mind.
