  • It governs the pituitary gland, cerebral cortex and central nervous system. Modern energy medicine, views the Crown Chakra as the master control center for the body’s hormonal and electrical systems.
  • Its colour changes from a deep violet to a white light. Violet is often seen as the bridge, while White is the destination (pure consciousness/all colors combined).
  • When it is open and in alignment its appearance can look like a halo.
  • The 7th chakra is about Spiritual connection, conscious connection with the divine source, a bridge to the cosmos.

It moves beyond “empathy” (feeling for someone) to “unity” (realizing there is no separation between you and them).

  • When a chakra is out of alignment prana, life force cannot flow in and out, it doesn’t emit or absorb as much energy. An imbalance in the crown chakra leads to spiritual distress.

What Blocks the Crown Chakra

The fundamental block of the Crown Chakra is the illusion of separation or ego’s identification with separateness. When you believe you are merely a physical, finite body separate from everyone else and separate from God/Source, the Crown Chakra cannot fully open. Its flow is stifled by that very belief.

  • Disbelief in spirituality: when you rely only on logic and science to explain everything, dismissing all intuition, faith, or spiritual experience as invalid or irrelevant.
  • Rigid Dogma/Fanaticism: your specific belief system or religion is the only truth, leading to an inability to accept other spiritual paths or insights.
  • Closed-Mindedness: Refusing to consider new information, spiritual concepts, or alternative perspectives that challenge your current worldview.
  • Attachment to Ego/Materialism: Believing that identity, happiness, and security are derived only from physical possessions, status, or external achievements, thereby cutting off the connection to the spiritual Self.
  • Lack of Purpose: Feeling disconnected from your higher path or life mission.
  • Spiritual Isolation: feeling alone on your spiritual path.
  • Fear of Death/The Unknown: Fear of letting go of the physical body or the familiar prevents the acceptance of the infinite nature of existence.
  • Lack of Self-Acceptance: Holding onto deep shame or guilt.
  • Lack of grounding: Neglecting the lower chakras (especially the Root Chakra), leading to excessive “head energy.”

In New Age circles, a blocked Crown is often cited as the cause of cynicism, existential crisis, or feeling “abandoned” by the universe.

It is also important to note, not to use spiritual ideas to avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, or becoming “ungrounded” and losing touch with physical reality.

How to Counter Blocks

The main ways to counter these blockers is to practice meditation, self-reflection, and service to others, which dissolves the ego boundary of separateness.

A visualization to open the crown chakra

Visualize a deep violet opening at the top of your head. Expand the opening till it is about a foot wide then start to spin it clockwise. Imagine drawing in golden or white light, drawing it down through the violet funnel and into your body. See it moving into your mind, down your spine and radiating out into all the parts of your body, filling every cell. See the golden white light radiate out from your body.
