The 7th Chakra
New Age Concepts

Introduction
Modern energy medicine views Sahasrara — known as the Crown Chakra, as the master control for the body’s, energy, hormonal and electrical systems. While the lower chakras anchor us securely to the Earth, our communities, and our personal power, the 7th Chakra, with its 1000 petals, opens upward into the infinite. It is the center for conscious connection with the divine source, acting as a direct bridge to the cosmos.
Sahasrara At a Glance
The Violet Bridge and White Light
The violet of Sahasrara is seen as the bridge, while brilliant white is where one arrives—representing pure consciousness and all the colors of the other chakras combined. When the Crown Chakra is open, clear, and fully in alignment, it alters the aura, sometimes taking on the radiant appearance of a spiritual halo.
In this aligned state, we transcend the illusion of separation to feel deep peace, remain fully aware of our spiritual self, and feel at one and connected with others. Completely anchored in the present moment with unity, oneness, and deep cosmic trust, this open channel allows us to receive insights of inner wisdom and intuitive knowing, enabling us to embody our highest self and fulfill our ultimate potential.
Embracing Your Highest Potential
An aligned Crown Chakra completely shifts how you move through the world, allowing you to see the bigger picture and step out of daily drama to view life’s challenges from a bird’s-eye perspective of wisdom. This alignment brings about the defining psychological shift of the 7th chakra: moving beyond mere “empathy” (feeling for someone) to true “unity” (realizing there is no separation between you and them). From this state of oneness, you naturally become selflessly devoted to the well-being of others because you see them as an intrinsic part of yourself.

What Blocks the Crown Chakra?
At its core, the fundamental block of the Crown Chakra is the illusion of separation—the ego’s rigid identification with being entirely separate from the rest of the world and from the divine Source. When you believe you are merely a physical, finite body navigating a lonely universe, the Crown’s upward flow is immediately stifled by that very belief. In New Age circles, this energetic constriction is often cited as the root cause of deep cynicism, existential crises, and a heartbreaking feeling of being completely “abandoned” by the universe.
When a chakra is out of alignment, prana cannot flow naturally in and out, causing the center to cease emitting and absorbing clean life force energy. Because Sahasrara is our direct link to the divine, an imbalance here manifests as a profound state of spiritual distress. This energy flow is primarily restricted by three distinct barriers that pull our awareness away from the cosmos: rigid secular thinking, a fundamental disbelief in the subtle aspects of existence, and the aftermath of deceit.
When these combined energetic barriers of secularism, disbelief, and shattered cosmic trust take root, individuals like atheists and agnostics often experience the most significant misalignment within the Crown Chakra.
This channel to the infinite is primarily restricted by several closely related mental and spiritual barriers:
- Intellectual and Rigid Closures: This occurs when we rely exclusively on logic and science to explain reality, dismissing intuition, faith, or spiritual experience as invalid. This mindset often hardens into rigid dogma, fanaticism, or a closed-mindedness that refuses to consider alternative perspectives or accept that other spiritual paths hold truth.
- Ego and Material Attachments: When we believe that our identity, happiness, and security are derived solely from physical possessions, status, or external achievements, we cut off our connection to the spiritual Self. This attachment often breeds a profound lack of purpose and a deep fear of death or the unknown, as the mind panics at the thought of letting go of the physical body.
How to Counter Blocks
To counter these deep energetic barriers, you must intentionally engage in practices that dissolve the ego’s rigid boundary of separateness. The primary ways to realign the Crown are through dedicated meditation, deep self-reflection, and selfless service to others. By moving your focus away from the isolated self and dedicating your energy to the well-being of the whole, you naturally thin the illusion of separation and reopen the channel to the infinite.
Symptoms of a Blockage
When the crown is compromised, the mind slips into heavy states of Tamas (inertia) and Rajas (restlessness) which can lead to a heartbreaking feeling of being abandoned by the universe. Look out for these common psychological malfunctions:
- Isolation and Loneliness: A deep, painful inability to connect with others takes root, leaving you feeling utterly alone on your path. This often happens when the pain of human betrayal causes you to close off your heart and your crown entirely.
- Alienation and Depression: Holding onto deep shame, guilt, or a lack of self-acceptance that creates a heavy internal barrier that can lead to the exhausting feeling of being entirely alone.
- Lack of Direction: Feeling untethered, confused, and drifting aimlessly through life.
- Inability to Set or Maintain Goals: Feeling an apathetic disconnect from your future and your potential.
- Spiritual Disconnection: Feeling cut off from your divine source, and trapped in existential despair.
The Traps of Misalignment: Ungrounding and Bypassing
When exploring the Crown Chakra, balance is everything. An open 7th chakra requires a strong foundation; a lack of grounding and neglecting the lower chakras (especially the Root Chakra) leads to excessive, unstable “head energy.”
Furthermore, we must be careful not to use lofty spiritual ideas to avoid facing unresolved emotional issues. True alignment means honoring our physical reality and doing the internal cleanup, rather than floating away into a spiritual bypass.
Daily Practices to Open the Sahasrara
Opening the Crown Chakra is not about forcing a spiritual breakthrough; it is a gentle, daily process of expanding your consciousness and thinning the walls of the ego. You can consciously stimulate and clear this center by integrating these modern lifestyle practices into your routine:
- Cultivate Noble Silence and Meditation: Dedicated silence is the ultimate medicine for the 7th chakra. By sitting quietly without consumption or distraction, you allow the frantic, restless movements of the mind (Rajas) to drop away naturally, leaving room for pure awareness to surface.
- Actively Seek High-Vibrational Inspiration: Feed your crown center by consciously choosing what you consume. Read sacred texts, listen to expansive philosophical discussions, or immerse yourself in art and media that genuinely inspire you and expand your mental horizons.
- Consciously Expand Your Mind: Make it a practice to challenge your own rigid thinking. When you notice yourself holding a strong opinion, gently force your mind to look at the exact opposite perspective with genuine curiosity. This loosens intellectual dogma and opens the gateway to higher wisdom.
- Connect with Cosmic Scale: The subconscious mind responds powerfully to physical scale. Spend time outdoors looking at vast, panoramic vistas—a wide ocean horizon, a mountain range, or a clear night sky filled with stars. This physical act of looking into the vastness reminds your energy system of its own infinite nature.
- Anchor Yourself in Heart-Centered Gratitude: Maintain a dedicated journal that bridges the heart and the crown. Use it not just to thank the universe for external things, but to write down detailed lists celebrating why you are inherently lovable, worthy, and an essential, unbroken piece of the divine whole.
Golden Funnel Activation: A Crown Visualization

Use this visualization during your daily meditation to clear stagnancy and invite cosmic prana into your system:
- Focus on the Crown: Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and bring your awareness to the very top of your head.
- See the Funnel: Visualize a vibrant, deep violet opening at the top of your head. Slowly watch this opening expand until it is about a foot wide.
- Activate the Spin: Begin to gently spin this violet funnel in a clockwise direction.
- Draw in the Light: Imagine drawing down a radiant stream of pure golden or white light from the cosmos, pulling it directly down through the center of the violet funnel.
- Fill the Cells: See this golden-white light cascade down into your mind, pour down your spine, and radiate into every single cell of your body. Watch your physical form become completely illuminated, radiating this divine, protective light outwards into your aura.
Grounding tools
1. Gemstones for Sahasrara & Grounding
When working with stones, the goal is to use high-vibrational stones to connect with pure consciousness, alongside deeply grounding stones to keep your physical body anchored to the Earth.
- Sahasrara Resonance (Crown Connection):
- Clear Quartz: Known as the “Master Healer,” it amplifies energy, purifies the subtle body, and aligns all chakras into pure white light.
- Amethyst: Its beautiful violet hue connects directly with the bridge of Sahasrara, promoting spiritual wisdom, lucid dreaming, and deep meditative stillness.
- Selenite: A high-vibrational stone that clears stagnant energy and provides an open channel to divine insights.
- The Grounding Antidotes (Root Anchor):
- Black Tourmaline or Obsidian: These are essential when doing Crown work. They act like an energetic lightning rod, pulling excess, floating “head energy” down through your body and securely locking it back into the Earth.
- Smoky Quartz: A perfect bridge stone because it offers the clear, protective light of quartz combined with deep, stabilizing earthly integration.
2. Essential Oils for Sahasrara & Grounding
Aromatherapy is one of the fastest ways to shift the nervous system and clear the mind for meditation.
- Sahasrara Resonance (Crown Connection):
- Frankincense: A deeply sacred oil used for centuries to quiet the ego, enhance prayer or meditation, and bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds.
- Lavender: Promotes immediate peace, harmony (Sattva), and calms a restless, overactive mind.
- Myrrh: Enhances spiritual awareness while maintaining a quiet, tranquil internal state.
- The Grounding Antidotes (Root Anchor):
- Vetiver: Known as the “Oil of Tranquility,” it is thick, earthy, and distilled from roots. It is incredibly heavy and immediately brings an over-stimulated mind straight back into the physical body.
- Cedarwood or Sandalwood: Woody, structural oils that provide an instant sense of stability, safety, and a calm, centered presence.
3. Food for Sahasrara & Grounding
Because the Seventh Chakra transcends the dense physical form and is associated with the element of Thought, its primary “food” is actually fasting, pure water, detoxifying broths, and clean air. However, we can use specific foods to support its energy and keep us physically sustained:
- Sahasrara Resonance (Crown Connection):
- Pure, Cleansing Fluids: Warm herbal teas (like peppermint or chamomile) and structured water help maintain a clear, unburdened electrical and nervous system.
- Violet-Hued Foods: Light foods with violet pigments, such as blackberries, purple grapes, and elderberry, subtly mirror the color spectrum of the Crown.
- The Grounding Antidotes (Root Anchor):
- If you find yourself floating away into a spiritual bypass, feeling untethered, or experiencing an overactive mind, you must shift your diet to heavy, earthy foods.
- Root Vegetables: Carrots, sweet potatoes, beets, ginger, and garlic. Because these foods grow beneath the earth, their energy is inherently stabilizing and physically anchoring.
- Protein and Warm, Hearty Meals: Stews, soups, and complex proteins require the body to put its energy into digestion, which naturally pulls the excessive, swirling energy down from the head and back into the belly and base.

The Sahasrara Awakening Yoga Sequence
To safely and effectively open the Crown Chakra, a hatha yoga practice must first systematically move through the lower chakras. By awakening and balancing our roots first, we create a stable anchor that allows the life force to safely elevate upward toward the crown—uncovering states of enlightenment, self-realization, fulfillment, and connection to the divine self.
(Only attempt what is accessible and safe for your body today. Use blocks or blankets where needed.)
Begin with Anjali Mudra (Prayer Gesture)
Center yourself in a comfortable seated position and bring your hands together at the heart space. This is a profound gesture of offering. By closing our eyes and bowing our head slightly toward our fingertips, we are honoring and celebrating this exact moment, setting an intention to let our physical practice become a bridge toward our greatest spiritual awakening.
Phase 1: Warming and Aligning the Lower Foundations
Seated & Warm-up
- Sukhasana (Easy Pose): Grounding into the sitting bones, lengthening the spine to create a clear, vertical channel for energy.
- Sufi Grind (Seated Circles): Target: Mūlādhāra (Root). Stirring up the dormant energy at the base of the spine.
- Upavista Bitilasana Marjaryasana (Seated Cat-Cow): Beginning to move the breath smoothly up and down the spinal column.
- Upavistha Konasana (Wide-Legged Seated Forward Fold): Target: Svādhisthāna (Sacral). Opening the hips and releasing emotional tension.
- Bhunamanasana (Greeting the Earth Twist): Target: Manipūra (Solar Plexus). A deep, long-legged twist to the back to stimulate the core fire and inner power.
- Dandasana (Staff Pose): Establishing structural alignment and firm mental presence.
All Fours & Gentle Flow
- Bitilasana Marjaryasana (Cat/Cow): Syncing movement with breath to liquefy spinal stiffness.
- Purvottanasana (Reverse Plank or Upward Plank): Target: Anāhata (Heart). A powerful front-body opener to lift and expand the chest cavity toward the sky.
- Adho Mukha Virasana (Downward-Facing Hero / Child’s Pose with a Block): Target: Ājñā (Third Eye). Resting your forehead or third eye firmly onto a yoga block. This physically quietens the analytical brain and turns the awareness completely inward.
Phase 2: Inverting and Activating the Crown
Once the energy channel is clear and the lower centers are wide open, we use specific inversions, backbends, and arm balances to flip our perspective and send a rush of fresh, oxygenated prana directly to the crown of the head.
Inversions & Arm Balances
- Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog): A mild inversion that begins to pull energy down from the lower body into the upper spine and heart.
- Catur Svana Asana (Dolphin Pose): Building the shoulder stability and upper body strength required to support deeper crown work.
- Sasangasana (Rabbit Pose): Placing the very top of the head lightly on the mat while lifting the hips. This provides a gentle, highly accessible physical stimulation to the Sahasrara vertex without bearing full body weight.
- Sirsasana (Headstand): The Ultimate Crown Stimulator. The king of asanas. By balancing on the vertex of the head, you establish a direct, geometric relationship between your physical body and the gravitational pull of the Earth, flooding the crown with blood flow and cosmic energy. (Skip or use a wall if this is not in your practice).
- Bakasana (Crow Pose): An arm balance to test your singular focus, mental equilibrium, and absolute trust in the present moment.
- Malasana (Garland Pose / Deep Squat): Dropping the tailbone low immediately after your inversions to safely re-ground, integrate, and stabilize the shifting energies.
Backbends & Finishing Poses
- Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (Bridge Pose): Target: Visuddha (Throat). Opening the throat gateway, thyroid system, and freeing the passage between heart and head.
- Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand): A cooling, introspective inversion to calm the nervous system and direct subtle energy toward the higher centers.
- Matsyasana (Fish Pose): The traditional counter-pose to shoulderstand. Arching the back and resting the crown of the head lightly on the earth behind you, opening the heart, throat, and crown simultaneously in a beautiful expression of surrender.
- Paschimottanasana (Intense Seated Forward Fold): Drawing the energy down, stretching the entire back line of the body, and quieting the mind.
Closing
- Savasana (Corpse Pose / Final Relaxation): The absolute most critical pose for Sahasrara. Lie completely flat, let go of all muscular control, and release the breath technique. In this state of total stillness, the illusion of the ego dissolves entirely, allowing you to melt into pure, boundless awareness and experience the true essence of the Seventh Chakra.
