By placing the Equator at the North and the Antarctic at the South, the spiritual map matches the actual wind and light of Southern Hemisphere, where I stand.
Here is the Southern Hemisphere Hrit Chakra, organized into its four functional quarters:
1. The Rising Sun (East & Southeast)
- East (Indra): Virtue and the rising light from the Coral Sea. Indra strikes down the clouds of ignorance over the water so wisdom can rise with the sun.
- Southeast (Agni): The “Kitchen of the Soul.” Before the day’s wisdom can be used, it must be purified. Agni ensures experiences are digested properly so they don’t turn into heaviness (Tamas).
2. The Pillar of Discipline (South & Southwest)
- South (Yama): Stillness from the Antarctic. This is where spiritual study lives. Yama uses the Pasha (Noose) to catch the ego, pulling you back from over-indulgence to Right Resolve.
- Southwest (Nirriti): The most difficult gate. Here, you face the roots of the unconscious and the shadow. By acknowledging the darkness in this cooling corner, it can finally be cleared.
3. The Flow of Mastery (West & Northwest)
- West (Varuna): Looking inland where the sun sets. Varuna governs Emotional Mastery, keeping the waters of your heart fluid but contained like riverbanks.
- Northwest (Vayu): The Wind and the movement of prana. On the windy Capricorn Coast, Vayu relates to the speed of your thoughts. Call on him to blow the mental clouds away and restore Mindfulness.
4. The Grace of the North (North & Northeast)
- North (Kubera): Spiritual Wealth and the abundance of the soul. Facing the Equator, he guards the treasures of divine wisdom, reminding you that prosperity is found when the heart is aligned with its highest purpose.
- Northeast (Ishana): Pure grace and the Highest Gate. This is where the boundaries between the self and the divine dissolve, allowing Shiva-consciousness to enter the heart.

There is a profound serenity and openness in the Ishana direction, the most sacred point in the Hrit Chakra. In this Highest Gate, the practitioner’s intention and effort are met with the pure gift of Grace, bestowing the absolute connection with the universe.
Northeast is the exact corner where the Heat of Transformation meets the Light of Awakening.
- North is the destination (the goal of purification).
- Northeast is the entry point (the Grace that allows you to reach the goal).
It is the “Highest Gate” because it represents the Zenith of the Morning. It is the moment the sun has risen high enough to burn away the mist but hasn’t yet reached the scorching intensity of the midday Equator actually hits your home.
The Junction of Light and Wisdom
On a compass, the North represents the guardian Kubera, who looks after wealth and abundance of the soul, everything that has been earned spiritually, while the East represents the Rising Sun and the dawn of wisdom.
The Northeast blends both “Knowledge” and “Peace,” it is seen as the “Portal of Grace.” Northeast represents the exit of the ego and the entry of Grace.
In the Hrit Chakra (the Secret Heart), your own effort can take you to the North Gate, but the Northeast is the “Highest Gate” because it is where you stop doing and start receiving. It is the point of surrender where Shiva-consciousness reaches down to meet the practitioner.
The Abode of Shiva (Ishana)
- Ishana is a title for the highest, most benevolent form of Shiva.
- Ishana is specifically the fifth face of Shiva (Sadasiva). While the other four faces look toward the cardinal directions (North, South, East, West), Ishana is the face that points upward toward the sky/zenith.
- It is considered the most subtle and transcendent of the five aspects, representing the source of all knowledge and the revealor of the Agamic teachings themselves.
- Ishana represents the power of revealing grace.
- It is associated with the element Space/Ether.
Rebuilding the Southern Hemisphere Compass
In this Southern Hemisphere orientation, we use a “Top-Down” vertical axis where South (Antarctic Stillness) is at the top of the map, representing the cooling anchor of the “back” of the heart, and North (Equatorial Heat) is at the bottom, representing the “front” or the forward-moving purification.
- Top (South): The seat of Yama (The Judge). Here, an imposing figure with a large staff holds the balance of justice, anchored by an arrow pointing to the South (cooling/Antarctic). This is the source of your Discipline and the anchor of your “back.”
- Bottom (North): The seat of Agni (Fire/Equator). Here, the multi-armed Lord of Fire stir a large mortar and pestle, processing raw experiences and purifying them, anchored by an arrow pointing to the North (hot/Equator). This is your Purification.
